“In your light I learn how to love.
In your beauty, how to make poems.
You dance inside my chest
where no-one sees you, but
sometimes I do, and
that sight becomes this art.”

Dawn to dusk

 Haiku anyone?

Not your cup of matcha? Fine

Stick to sushi then

———————————————————-

Dawn is out hunting.

Scared shadows huddle under

the coffee table

Winter morning walk

snowy scrunches underfoot

fresh like green apples

Potholes in the road

The CD skips lanes again

Here’s a new story

Sun streams through the leaves

puddling golden on the grass.

Do the ants really care?

Tossed coin pauses

Pensive in the summer sun

it’s all downhill now

momentary rain-

bows on corpulent bubbles.

Beauty waits for none

Slouched down in my seat

Homer hisses through clenched teeth:

‘Red light turn green now!’

Mushing up colours

On this iPad in the sky

A naughty child, dusk

Night sets in quietly

dishwasher trundles on alone

thought stains rinse away

Pop-up ad

Strangers sing

Of ocean waves

And falling leaves

Star-struck lovers

And wilting flowers

Of wayward hearts

Chasing butterflies

Stringing rainbows

Hunting sundrops

Riding moonbeams

The loss of innocence

And the guilt of loss

Of footsteps searching

dark corners of

dusty souls

The joy of Life

often shallow

And the peace

of Death

always deep

Voices in the void

Guitar chords and

chorus lines

A lonely piano

chasing a drumbeat

Why then,

In all of this,

do I see

your face?

A pop-up ad

I can’t get rid of?

Friendly faces

 That day as four boys

who wanted desperately

to be men fell into a

strained silence drowning

out the resounding crunch

of a blue car ramming

into that rusty jeep,

as I smoothed down

my shaking hands with

my tattered nerves,

He said it would be best

if we fished the Def Leppard

tape out of the car stereo

just so it doesn’t seem like

we were careless

- which we weren’t.

I thought that was a good day.

That day as I said out loud that

I loved her, He gave me

a hug, uncharacteristic for

one who is not inclined

to splurges of affection, then

asked me whether I was

serious, as if,

he would disembowel me

otherwise with his quiet

eyes passing

effortlessly for daggers.

I thought that was a good day

That day when I thought

that all was lost after

all that effort, but found

some unaccustomed strength

of character, to put on a brave

face and lean into the punches

taking them all unflinchingly

on my double chin,He found me

- the news was good after all -

I was going places,

more so than I ever dreamt.

I thought that was a good day

That day as I slumped,

fed up with

repetitive tasks on

repetitive days fuelling

repetitive thoughts of failure,

He said something surprisingly

simple and misleadingly

mundane, almost a platitude

that made perfect sense

and lent my soul some

much needed latitude.

I thought that was a good day

That day as I sat in the car,

Loss and Darkness pouring out

in streams leached of colour

much like the world around me,

He muttered an Arabic prayer

for the one I never knew

but needed to fill a soul-shape

in mine, the words made

no more sense than the pain but

the sounds washed away

some of the darkness.

I thought that was a good day.

That day when toddler dreams

got tangled up on a high branch

out of reach of a failing father,

He climbed up above my

futile incompetence, and brought

down that purple dragon

to the waiting

boy with eager eyes open

wider than arms.

I thought that was a good day

That day when He asked me to

shed my excess weight and

baggage, to be a better man,

to run against the grain

of anger and arrogance

and insecurity, quietly insisting

that I find a grain of something

true and beautiful to keep up

with her soft radiance

and her smiles.

I thought that was a good day

This day when at last

I sit down to flip through

these faded freeze-frames,

framed within the borders

of my wayward dreams,

I wonder if these men of

shared history and scared

moments, splattered with

love and heartbreak

and unexpected triumph,

measure up to Her as I

tote up their soul marks

on mine unable to agree a

fair trade price for Him

and Him and Him of course.

I think this is a good day.

Lone mower

The steady drone sneaks

In through the patio glass

I look up, washed plate

in hand, still warm

Her blade is at work

hungry for fresh pastures

Leaving a trail of

decapitated dreams in green

Those unruly curls hiding

the missing purple glove

and that red garden fork

slowly recede into

a crew cut, stark

and sensible

Now it’s our turn

Unkempt menfolk

who sullenly huddle

Greying hair and

Growing locks

Wilting already

Under the steely

gaze of those clippers

The lone mower cometh

Instant poetry

Cheap and dirty

much like the

nondescript

smudgy brown

sludge, oozing

welcome warmth

From a wheezing

machine

Under the dank stairs

On a lonely platform

I fish out some old coins

caught amongst the life-lint

tucked beneath my

left coat pocket

One for sorrow

More for pain

In return for a

thimbleful of

Temporary (in)sanity

Belonging

 On those days

When I look away in anger

Making cold mornings

Heartless

And empty nights

Soulless

In our dreams your

Heart talks to mine

As my soul holds

yours close

And it whispers its fears

And it shouts out its

Anger

And it pours out

joy and love

and at times

Darkness

And I say

My soul to your heart

Let me feel for you

Let me fall for you

Let me fail for you

Let me burn

To fuel

Your wings

Soaring above all

That is mundane

And once dared

to hold You down

in vain

You belong to the skies

And I belong to you

Skinny latte

Face down in sand or
Facing the camera

It is no use

You boy

With the foreign name

I only see the face

Of that other boy

Also with little feet

And a foreign name

And hair that rasps against

lips after good night kisses

Proud owner of a

Little red shirt

Much like yours

But not as wet

For you I have pledged

The copper that tumbled

On to the counter

As I grabbed my

Skinny latte to go

Superpower

If I were to be bitten

By a mutant arachnid

Or bathed in eerie

gloaming radiance

Perhaps ejected in

infancy in fancy Lycra

From an imploding world

I do not wish to walk

upside down on ceilings

Or make molten metal

From a single stare

Grant me just one wish

One superpower

To belt out

At the top of my voice

Holding a tune

With careless ease

Bits of my soul

Raining down on all

Within earshot

Gladly bathe I would -

in Kryptonite no less

If only I could ...

Sing

Just once

before I die

Blink of an eye

You come in from the cold
Jawline stencilled

Between cap and shawl

“Kids asleep?” You ask

in your business voice -

meant for those

hallowed halls at work -

booming hollowly

in our quiet hallway

I point silently up

With one finger

Miming with the other hand

To keep it down

But too late! a patter

of little feet above -

We share an eye roll

BLINK

She sits towards the front

Of the grand lecture hall

Bobbed hair

bobbing, reined in

above the dizzy patterns

on the back of her

fashionably tailored blouse

I try out words

that might fit

into the spaces where

fair skin peeks out -

filigree? lattice? network?

The last one wakes

Dr Johnson’s whispers

In my nerdy head

‘A thing reticulated

or decussated, with interstices intersecting at intervals’

I laugh alone at my

Sad Little Joke

BLINK

The cold has crept in

Insidious, uninvited

Seditiously garnering

discontent against

Our Love that We placed

next to a burning bush

On the mountain we

climbed together

Hold my hand now

And Blaze

- as you always do -

In full glory

And turn to ash those

leering skulls

lining up in

the gloaming,

their eye sockets

brimful of emptiness

BLINK

This friend of friends

Seems more

than a friend,

But surely we are

Just Friends?

(Note to self:

Be nice, you weirdo

Don’t freak her out)

BLINK

She hugs me

As I hurt

As it has never hurt before

BLINK

I’m convinced

she is Samuel Shem’s Berry,

but does she know this

Shem loving shy boy

Full of body fat and halitosis?

BLINK

She changed that

old answer phone message

(Without telling me -

why should she?)

For 15 years I heard

That familiar voice caught

In a time warp - chirpy and

bouncy and innocent

And eternally young

This New One is

Powerful, Self Assured

Means Business,

Announces the

Arrival of a Super Mom, and

expects Capitals for Impact

in the Middle of

Hyperbolic Descriptives

But secretly I carry that

Other one on an

endless loop in my head,

A young twenty something

prancing around a

Standard issue

NHS apartment

In a red and black

Lumberjack shirt

BLINK

Her hand

feels right

In mine

Are these wrinkles new?

Surely they have

always been there

under the fluorescent

streetlights filtering through

mayflower branches in

tropical bloom

in the lambent glow

Of bedside LED

Quietly counting those nascent

hours budding in moonlight

Alighting gently on

The steering wheel

As you hum along

With the motorway

Scenes flashing

past Us on this

Endless road trip

Caught in mid-flight

In the blink of an eye

Stardust

Born of the fleeting whim of stardust to take our shape
we slowly dissolve back in time - that Universal solvent that solves everything
And return to stardust like pigeons that home without Sat Nav
For the wasted breath we exhale to give life to others in our wake
Just as we have shared what Newton gasped as that apple fell
And what Darwin sobbed as his daughter died
Our breaths have swapped stories with wisps from shy Ramanujan
And the obscure lungs of Madhavan as he lived the life of Pi
But also mingled without judgement with the roar of Stalin and Hitler and the futile prayers of all their faceless victims

We are at once stuck to the skin of this cooling ball of fire
And yet belong out there in the endless empty void
Perhaps this is the duality we cannot reconcile
This pull of our home and the promise of our paths
And in our silent indecision
We find thoughts of god

Hiding in plain sight  between electron paths

Father’s Day

He woke up bleary eyed,
wiping dreams off
stunted eyelashes
Craving volatile alkaloids
in Ascension, leaving the
less worthy behind
in dark tarry pools,
much like
Dreams of dinosaurs
trapped in mud

Work calls early, and amidst
flashes of blue comes
Another father on this
Special day, set aside
for spikes in sales
of greeting cards and
shaving foam

That horse oft flogged
was flagging, but we tried
our best available magic,
donned in Royal Blue,
Concocting potions, powders,
poultices, and balm for the brain
But this horse had bolted
And despite mechanised
arms pounding a pound
of mindless flesh
with unrestrained brutality,

we failed,

Our Collective Fatherhood watched
one of its own
drift up - perhaps
a better alkaloid
in Ascension, leaving
dark muddy ones behind

A lonely cloud wandered home
battered, but not like
that horse we flogged
endlessly, now lying
panting and broken
in a ditch between two bellows
meant for air and laughter,
filled to the brim with blood

The door opened to a promise
of giggles and impish grins
Monsters strictly banished to
the outside, where they
wait for another day
while an unworthy father
is swamped in hugs
and painstakingly poorly drawn
glittered cards brimming with
Promises of Love to keep me
sane in my loneliness as
I fight unresolved guilt
and justify my existence
for yet another day,

when Fathers matter less

whether Dead

or Alive
